Everything had been set in order. Shortly after arriving at the Weyr -- of course, after she'd picked out a Weyr, unpacked everything, and re-arranged it at least four times -- Eyrlaina had sent out for a harper quartet to entertain them for an evening. She'd also spoken to the Headwoman and asked for a feast to be prepared, which she had obliged, if a bit grudgingly due to the fact that the fattest bucks were already being slaughtered for the hatching. But Eyrlaina had insisted, and the Headwoman had complied. So now, all that was left to do was to make sure that everyone knew of the special event. The dragonriders she left to Coreanth, who had dutifully told the dragons in the Weyr of the date and time of the event, but had decided to take the Candidates and Weyrfolk into her own hands.
Craftily designing notices, Eyrlaina had planted them throughout the Weyr -- in the Kitchens, the Lower Caverns, and on the door to the Candidate Barracks -- with the date and time of the festivities. It was her way of greeting her new home and showing them all what she was about. First impressions were, after all, the most important.
The day of the grand feast had arrived. Eyrlaina had carefully chosen her gown for the evening, which was a deep shade of emerald to accent her deep eyes. Gold trim decorated the bodice as well as the hem, to accent her hair, which she'd actually tied up in a ponytail for the event. Usually she let it hang down, despite it's lack of volume. Currently the Jr. Weyrwoman was busy making sure all the preparations were in order. She'd already spoken to the Harpers who had obliged her by coming to the Weyr, and told them what songs she'd requested. She also made sure they would take requests from anyone who asked. Next she checked the kitchen to be sure they had enough food, and of the right variety, as well as fresh klah and wine. Then she made sure the Dining Hall looked resplendent with table decorators and candles, to give a homey look. Then, she repeated the process three more times for a total of four.
Once Eyrlaina was confident that everything was as it should be, she paused in the dining cavern with her hands planted on her hips to survey her work with a critical eye. You've outdone yourself this time.[/i] Coreanth, who had been watching her progress through Eyrlaina's eyes, sounded a tad curious. I have a good feeling about this Weyr, love. I'm hoping we'll be here for a while. Indeed.[/i] Luckily she'd found a rider to watch Eyalen at the last minute so that she could focus on the guests at hand. Quickly glancing towards the main entryway, Eyrlaina realized that they would start arriving at any second, and plastered a big grin on her face. As if on cue, the harper quartet launched into a hauntingly beautiful melody, soft and mellow yet inviting all the same.

Eavan was no idiot, especially when it came to her own mannerisms and behaviors. She knew she had a vain streak and most of the time she tried to quell it as much as possible. However, she couldn’t control that vanity as she made some final adjustments in the mirror. It was hair that was bothering her. She had the mass of blond curls bound on the right side of her head in a low, loose ponytail. A few tendrils that were too short to stay in the pony tail lightly fell on the left side. In all honesty her hair looked great, but she was too finicky to realize it.
The dress she had was an eye catching red. The sleeves were long and flared, but connected just under her arms and left her shoulders bare. It had a v-neck cut, but it didn’t drop down far enough to show cleavage, but it was far enough down to be quite the tease. As far as embroidery and other intricate designs go it didn’t have any, but the hems were lined in black and a black sash tied about her middle showing off her thin waist. She turned about one more time in the mirror and finally conceded that she looked as good as she was going to.
Karthik warbled at her in a whiney voice. Her mother had allowed her to get ready in her small private room since the barracks wasn’t as private. ”Now Karthik, if you come with me you can’t get scared. This banquet is important to the new weyrwoman and I can’t be looking around for you during it.” She said as she picked up the bronze. Karthik sent her feelings of love and worry about being left alone. ”Alright, but the minute you misbehave I’m sending you back to our cot. Got it?” The bronze chirped in understanding before he hopped onto her shoulder and curled himself about her neck. The bronze looked like a rather stunning accessory to Eavan’s outfit.
Finally done, she headed towards the Living Cavern. She could already hear the harpers playing as she approached. The song they were playing was soft but felt inviting at the same time. She was amazed when she stepped in to see that Eyrlaina was the only one there besides the harpers and other workers. She recovered from being the first, yet again, to approach the new Weyrwoman. ”Good evening, Weyrwoman Eyrlaina. I don’t believe the Dining Hall has ever looked finer.” She said giving the woman a bow while trying to not upset Karthik. The bronze just stared at Eyrlaina suspiciously and nervously. She hoped that the goldrider didn’t think it odd her being the first to greet her again. Eavan honestly didn’t contrive to be the first, it just happened that way.

The idea of the feast was heavy on both Kogran and Nrak's minds, though for very different reasons. N'rak, much like Eavan, was carefully choosing his clothing and working with his long, grey hair in an attempt to look just right. Sometimes it was frustrating, being his shape. Women had it easier, with their nice, soft curves. He knew what he'd wear if he had a female body. Or, perhaps, a more toned male body, but he had never really had one of those either. Instead, he looked down at his trunk of clothing and wished he had the time to have made something specifically for this feast.
Kogran, on the other hand, had no similar worries. He understood just enough to know he should put on some nicer clothing, and just "freshly washed" didn't count. No rips, no dirt, nothing old and worn... he would have asked Eavan, but she seemed occupied. There was probably another girl who could answer him just as easily, but Kogran decided to do it all himself. He put on his darkest pants, which were a nice deep brown and seemed clean and... not very worn at all. He also found a bright green shirt. It was sort of plain and boring, but he had only worn it a couple times, so it seemed like a good choice. Once dressed, Kogran took a quick look at his unhatched egg by the fire before he went to the living caverns.
N'rak had picked something out around the same time Kogran arrived at the feast. It was all dyed a very dark blue, darker than Keth, even! Trousers, a light shirt and a heavy jacket. They were all a bit tight; it was an older outfit, designed to be cut just right to his form... ten turns ago. It still fit well enough.
Quit worrying and go. N'rak sighed. Since he was alone, he replied outloud. "I'm not worrying."
Keth made no reply. N'rak came out, gave his Keth a fond pat between the eyes, and went down to the living caverns. Where Kogran had simply taken a seat, entirely unaware of proper manners, N'rak approched the weyrwoman and bowed.
"Welcome to Sunset. I hope you like it here."

Julim had gotten himself dressed and badgered Prinner into getting dressed and coming with him. Prinner needed to learn more about the Weyr and soon, before the eggs hatched.
T'prin had told him to help Prinner out and T'prin, or rather Lyrith was rarely wrong. Prinner was most likely going to impress and there were things he had to know.
"There will be better food then usual and I'll be able to point out and give you the names of the people you need to know in the Weyr. Remember not knowing the weyrling master?
Prinner winced. That had been embarrassing. Alright, he was dressed, brushed and going. He had gone over forms of address with Julim though why the taller, better looking and more popular boy was bothering with him he had no idea.
He hadn't asked, just listened and learned. He would owe Julim for this, but that was fine. The older boy was asking for trouble, being a flirt and being so visible. He obviously didn't know or agree with the 'keep your head low' philosophy.
The dining cavern looked great though, and there was music. Music was always a wonderful treat. "This is worth it just for the music" he muttered to Julim, not realizing where they were going until they were almost to a woman. Oh shards. Was this the new Queen Rider?

Too fun. Prinner had realized who she was. Julim bowed to the Weyrwoman and introduced them both. "Weyrwoman Eyrlaina, I am Candidate Julim and this is Candidate Prinner. It is a pleasure to meet you and thank you very much for having the feast and music. I hope your Queen is settling in well?"
Prinner looked like he was considering running but he at least managed a decent bow at his name. How old was the kid? His opinion varied from 12 to 17 depending on what was going on. This was one of the times he thought 12 was more accurate.
The new Weyrwoman knew how to throw a feast and how to dress well. Julim wondered what she was like otherwise. Please don't let her be a complete stickler for every manner and every courtesy? This was Sunset, not one of the Old Weyrs.

J'lin had actually laid out his gather clothes earlier in the day, glad of an opportunity to wear them. It seemed like he had spent the entire past sevenday working, and a chance to relax for a few hours sounded fantastic. Portenth was currently wooing a green that was close to being in season, and was feeling quite pleased with himself, so J'lin knew that he would need to look for a friendly enough weyrworker to spend time with in a few days. He didn't mind, feeling in quite a good mood himself.
The feast was really a good thing for the entire Weyr. They finally had two queens, both apparently healthy, and maybe a third hardening on the sands. J'lin loved his home, second only to his dragon, and the arrival of the new weyrwoman was fantastic news as far as he was concerned.
He approached her just as the two candidates slipped away, bowing respectfully with his rare, quirky grin on his face. "Weyrwoman, we really appreciate your transfer to Sunset Weyr," he told her. "I'm J'lin, I look to Portenth," he added, as he stood up straighter. He stepped aside then, for someone else to greet the goldrider, and wandered off to the tables of food. If he wanted something hot to eat, he would need to get there before the majority of the candidates.

It was strange, returning to the Weyr after being temporarily suspended. J’ain had forgiven Ansith, of course; he had only turned her in because he’d caught her. Alcohol in the candidate barracks… what had she been thinking? A lot of things, actually, but that wasn’t the point. Some rules were not meant to be broken. The entire lecture she’d received from her wingleader a few candlemarks ago still smarted her pride. Apparently Sa’kor had thought she didn’t remember the first one well enough. The middle-aged bluerider forced herself to hold her head stiffly erect as she marched into the Living Cavern to stare down anyone that looked her way. The suspension had to have been noticed, even if the cause had not been made public, but she had somehow retained her position by the skin of her teeth. More because you groveled, Ansith remarked ponderously. He’d followed her train of thought. You only need to greet the new goldrider. Ignore the rest. If they look, pretend they are looking at your scar.[/color] I’d rather pretend they’re looking at my outfit, she replied caustically. They’d have reason to stare at that, too. J’ain, the masculine, J’ain the bluerider, was wearing a dress. Ansith had all but bullied her into the hated white garment, telling her it was the final stage of her punishment. Total humiliation, more like. Its only redeeming quality in her eyes was that collar, hem, and bodice were all bordered in a blue that almost matched Ansith’s spots. The silky material felt… girly. It swished against her leg hair in a most unpleasant fashion with every step she took, and without proper boots on she could feel every uneven bump in the glassy floor. Her feet, dear Faranth! They were already tender, and sending complaints straight to her brain about the blue-dyed leather slippers she wore. So fashionable. So useless. So infuriating! If there were an emergency, she’d be better off removing the sharding things and going barefooted. At least her hair was properly tamed into place. Waves of amusement were rolling off Hers. She could feel them. Don’t laugh at me! she snarled. You are so insufferable! If J’ain had been a feline, her tail would have been lashing. Is it near your time of the month?[/color] the blue asked, with galling solicitude. The bluerider stopped midstride, grinding her teeth, dark eyes flashing, but seriously considering. Her irritation faded (slightly) at realizing Ansith was probably right. J’ain decided she’d better not sit down, just in case. Stupid, stupid dress. She strode right over behind J’lin, allowing the music to penetrate her bubble of ugly feelings as she waited for her turn to speak. “Duties to you, goldrider,” she said gruffly. Is that all?“Welcome to Sunset.” There. She said it. ----- A party, a celebration, a feast? Primbel didn’t much care about the reason behind the party, he was just glad for an excuse to dance with a cute young woman or two. While his wife was away at Lemos visiting their son, he didn’t have to worry about her disapproving eyes. A dance was a dance, nothing more. Just now, though, he had claimed a plate and was enthusiastically ripping into a large chunk of flesh, sharing of course with his second most favorite female creature on all Pern. Sulee didn’t seem to be feeling well lately, but the man marked it up to postpartum exhaustion. A large clutch always seemed to take more out of the old girl; she was hardly eating at all, but every now and then she let loose a pitiful moan that was mostly show. Her eyes were still mostly green through the theatrics, or the master stonesmith might’ve worried more. The broad man decided as he added a bite of tuber to the already-masticated mush in his mouth that going to compliment that pretty goldrider on her feast would just have to wait a while. Round two… bite!((Kadia will be unfashionably late. Sa'kor and Breda will also be in attendance at some point. <3)) |

Eavan had gotten her a mug of klah and looked at the food that the kitchen had prepared. They had certainly outdone themselves and she was a little sad she hadn't been a part of the staff that had made the feast. She would have laid odds with a Bitran that her mother had been part of it though.
Eavan felt a bit odd being the first one to arrive, but it wasn't long until others began walking in. First was Kogran and she was glad to see that the boy had dressed up like he was suppose to. She nodded at him and smiled just before the Weyrlingmaster came in and greeted Weyrwoman Eyrlaina. Then, Julim and Prinner came in. They both looked handsome in the outfits and she approved of the way Julim greeted the new goldrider.
More people came in then. J'lin was one and she waved politely at him. J'ain came in wearing a dress of all things. At first Eavan hadn't recognized the bluerider. She had noticed the Assistant Candidatemaster's absence lately, but decided it best not to guess a reason why she had been. Eavan decided that she should probably go speak to people, so she walked up to Julim and Prinner. "Hello boys, don't you guys look sharp."

"Monketh, I feel silly." Ol'ver said as he made his way to the feast. "You look amazing though, stop complaining." The bronze said, his voice still sounding smarmy after his meeting with Coreanth. Ol'ver couldn't quite believe his dragon. He liked clothes that were comfortable and gather dress was rarely ever comfortable. He was wearing a handsome outfit, though. His pants were black wher hide, nicely pressed. His tunic was a deep red color that was laced with silver ties from the middle of his chest up. Over the tunic was was a matching black wher hide jerkin that closed from right under his tunic's lacing down. It's hem lines were decorated in silver.
He pulled at his tunic's lacing, loosening them up a bit. He couldn't stand having clothes that felt like they were choking him, so he opted to show some skin instead of being that uncomfortable. Once in the Dining Hall he quickly spotted the weyrwoman whom he had just had a lovely meeting with earlier. Duties first, he had always been taught, so he headed for Eyrlaina.
She looked quite resplendent in her green dress, a fact that didn't go unnoticed by Ol'ver even if he would never act on such thoughts. "Weyrwoman Eyrlaina." He said as he kissed the top of her hand. "This place looks amazing and music is quite the nice touch. I'm impressed." He gave her a lop sided grin. "Who's the one over doing it now?" Monketh asked teasingly. "What?" Ol'ver asked, completely oblivious to what his bronze was getting at. Monketh didn't answer him, just snorted happily.
(IC challenge! Ol'ver's never been drunk. Anyone up to the task of trying to get him there? lol)

As Sa'kor walked through the arching entrance to the Living Cavern for the second time since the feast began, his eyes returned to single out Eyrlaina once more. To his chagrin (and irritation) two bronzeriders were already hovering around her, along with no small number of other folk. He would have to wait to make his move; too bad he wasn't hungry yet, or the delicious smells might have distracted him.
You're planning something, Morgaith stated flatly.
Am I? The arrogant brownrider was not used to examining his own motives, but it dawned on him that his dark mindmate was correct. The man's sharply polished wher-hide boots and deep gray leather suit weren't as bright and cheerful as other outfits he saw around the room, but if anything, they told at least as much about the wearer. He didn't see the goldrider's arrival as cause for merriment, only a solid, bone-deep relief. And perhaps, after he'd seen her face, perhaps a touch of forgivable animal lust mingled with the slightest hint of ambition. He was tough with his wingriders; he thought his conditioning would only serve to improve every wing, if he could impose it upon them.
As Weyrleader he could.
Morgaith, nestled comfortably in his weyr, snorted. You know I am well aware of my potential - and I do find Coreanth attractive. I am willing to attempt to catch her when she Rises. The 'but' in his mindvoice was clear.
But you make no guarantees, Sa'kor guessed, scowling and shoving his hands into his pockets. His broad shoulders hunched forward as he literally growled at a serving drudge, come too close. It was intensely gratifying to see the way the young woman scurried away with her skin of wine. You will try, succeed or fail.
If she Chooses, it won't matter how well I fly.
That reminder stung Sa'kor's pride more than a little. He saw the two bronzeriders' attention in a slightly different light now. They were both younger than him, if not by much, but Ol'ver was the one he most seriously considered from his posture by the door. As the dragon of a fellow wingleader, Monketh had more of an image to live up to; apparently, more ambition than J'lin's Portenth. It was possible Portenth was only biding his time until an opportunity rose that he desired enough to pursue. Neither of the bronzes- or their riders- were bad looking.
Time to go break it up. Waiting would win him nothing. Sa'kor sauntered deliberately toward Eyrlaina, taking up more space than he really should've as he came to a halt behind J'ain. In a dress. Too bad she didn't ride green, the man mused, though she was older than he liked. He tried to catch the goldrider's eye, pretty well ignoring everyone else, so assured was he of his own importance. He did wait for a break in the conversation before speaking, if a tad impatiently. "Goldrider, it is our pleasure-" Baldly, he emphasized the word, letting a smile play around his usually-immobile lips. "-that you have come to Sunset. I am Sa'kor of brown Morgaith." He saluted curtly, gaze calculating as he regarded the desirable woman before him.
Slowly, Morgaith cautioned. He was crouching on his dragon-couch now, tail tip twitching like a feline waiting to pounce.

It seemed as if Eavan's presence in the Dining Hall was the catalyst that brought the feast to life. Crowds of people milled into the area, dragonriders and kitchen staff alike, a steady buzz of conversation starting. The moment she spotted Eavan, a bright smile lit up Eyrlaina's face as she stepped forward to meet the girl, her emerald gown swaying around her long legs. "Thank you, dear. I certainly hope so. I wanted to make this night as enjoyable as possible," she practically purred, gazing around the room with the young woman. At that moment, however, the Weyrlingmaster approached, so Eyrlaina flashed Eavan an apologetic smile as she moved on to the bluerider.
"Weyrlingmaster N'rak," she responded formally, recognizing him by his knots. And blue Keth,[/i] Coreanth added from her ledge, thoroughly enjoying the scene that played out before her in her rider's eyes. "It is a pleasure to meet you. So far I find it to my liking." The weyrlingmaster also received one of her bright smiles, before a few other Candidates approached her. "If you'll excuse me," Eyrlaina said politely to N'rak and sidestepped around the man, gesturing towards the food. "There is plenty of food if you're hungry." The bow that she received from Julim amused her, and an approving look alighted in her light green eyes. "Thank you, young man," she said in that same approving tone. "It is a pleasure to meet both of you. I hope you enjoy the festivities." I am settling in quite well, thank you,[/i] Coreanth spoke directly to Julim, a note of amusement in her melodic voice. Don't scare the poor lad, Eyrlaina admonished as she smiled and moved on, attempting to greet everyone she came across. It was tiring business, but she expected no less of herself.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, J'lin," she responded with a smile, slightly startled by his quirky grin. He was rather attractive, but before she had a chance to say more the bronzerider actually wandered away. A light frown marred Eyrlaina's brow as she watched his departure, mulling over that turn of events. She didn't expect to be the center of attention, but she certainly expected more than that. However, another woman took his place, and she instantly recognized her. "Ah, Bluerider J'ain," Eyrlaina said, a knowing tone in her expressive voice, "we meet at last. Thank you." Rather than say anything else, however, for this was a day of festivities, the goldrider gestured eloquently towards the food. "Please, relax and enjoy the rest of your evening." As her gaze surveyed the scene, quite pleased with herself now that people were conversing and eating the food, Eyrlaina allowed herself a moment of satisfaction.
The moment was quickly cut into by the presence of someone at her side, even as a warm hand took her own. Starting lightly in surprise, the Jr. Weyrwoman whirled a tad ungracefully towards Ol'ver, staring as he kissed the top of her hand. It was something she'd never come across before, and this showed itself by the blush on her cheeks. "Wingleader Ol'ver," she responded just as courteously, attempting not to look Ol'ver square in the eyes for fear of feeling her foolish nerves once more. "Thank you. There's nothing I enjoy more than planning a good part," she admitted quietly as she took her hand from his, wiping her palms against the skirt of her gown. "It's nice to see people enjoying themselves." Incoming. Wingleader Sa'kor and brown Morgaith,[/i] Coreanth said suddenly, intruding upon their conversation. Remembering the man from the day of wing training, Eyrlaina turned towards him with a smile that slipped slightly as she saw the look on his face.
"I kindly thank you, Wingleader Sa'kor," she responded politely. However, she was otherwise at a loss for words, and instead snagged a goblet of wine that was being served on platters by drudges. Rather than speak, the Jr. Weyrwoman smiled and sipped at the white wine, her gaze occasionally darting towards Ol'ver.

Neiram was late to arrive, of course, since she had to make sure that she looked good enough to go to a Feast in honor of the new Weyrwoman. Her hair was braided into two plaits, and those two plaits were intricately twisted together to make one braid. Her dress was a lovely silver color with white paisley patterns covering the bodice. The sleeves were made of shear fabric that didn’t do much to keep her warm as she wandered across the weyrbowl towards the dining caverns, but they sure did look nice.
Once inside, she gasped at how many people were already there and how wonderful the place looked. It was a lot more homey than she had seen it so far. Neiram spotted the new Weyrwoman and made her way there. The woman had two near her talking, one of them was a bit intimidating, but she had to greet the Eyrlaina as it was the only right thing to do. She took a deep breath before she politely wedged herself next to the weyrwoman. ”Greetings, Weyrwoman Eyrlaina. I’m Neiram, a candidate from Lemos. I can see you’re busy, but I wanted to give you my gratitude in being here and throwing such a lovely party. If you’ll excuse me, I’ll leave you to your company.” She said very properly as she bowed and then quietly eased her way from Eyrlaina.
It wasn’t that she didn’t want to speak to the new goldrider more, but she looked busy, too busy for a lowly candidate. Perhaps she would get to talk to her later. Then, she noticed Eavan, Julim, and Prinner all standing and talking to each other so she made her way over to them. ”Hi guys. This sure is something isn’t it?” She asked happily and in a giddy tone. The harpers then began to play a very catchy tune and Neiram’s face lit up. ”Oh! Prinner, dance with me. This is a party after all.” She said as she practically dragged the older boy to a clear area to dance.

”I must say you do a splendid job of it. If this is how well you plan a party, I can’t wait to see what you’ll do for the weyr.” Ol’ver said sincerely. He loved Sunset, but it was about time this place was whipped into better shape. Not that it was really anyone’s fault, but unforeseen circumstances had taken some tolls on the young Weyr. He was about ready to say more, but then Sa’kor came up to greet Eyrlaina.
Ol’ver got along with everyone, even Sa’kor, but there was something about the man that always made Ol’ver go instantly on guard. He was a leader that got results and Ol’ver couldn’t complain about his work ethic. The man couldn’t seem to stop working. Besides that though, he was rude, arrogant, and at times far too harsh. There was also something else about him that made Ol’ver uneasy. He couldn’t put his finger on it, but the way he addressed Eyrlaina had something to do with it. ”Good today to you Wingleader Sa’kor. My duty to your Morgaith.” Ol’ver said in a friendly if restrained tone, the smile on his face was as genuine as always though.
Eyrlaina grabbed her a glass of wine so Ol’ver did the same. It was a party after all. He didn’t really notice that the new Weyrwoman kept looking over at him. Then, one of the younger candidates came up and introduced herself. Ol’ver grinned, she was proper girl which was good. He watched almost in boredom as she removed herself from their group and started mingling with the other candidates that were there. Then, the harpers finished their song and began another, a more upbeat dance tune.
Ol’ver grinned wider when he saw the young girl pull one of the boys to a clear space, demanding that they dance. ”You should ask Eyrlaina to dance. After all, she planned the party she should enjoy it fully for herself.” Monketh suggested. The bronze was not above pressuring his rider into doing things he normally wouldn’t do himself. Ol’ver thought about it for a second, but came to the conclusion that his dragon was right. He put down his wine glass on a table before turning back to Eyrlaina and asking, ”May I have the honor of the first dance with the new Weyrwoman?” The half-cocked grin was on his face and his eyes were mildly pleading. He hoped his hands weren't sweating too much thanks to his nervousness about asking a woman to dance, so he wiped his palms before holding out one hand for her to take.

J'lin watched from a distance as both Ol'ver and Sa'kor fawned over the Weyrwoman. Oh, ordinarily, if she hadn't been the presumed senior weyrwoman, he might have courted her himself, though he liked to think he would have been smoother than either of them. Especially Sa'kor. But he did not want the job of Weyrleader. Wingsecond was good enough for him right now, and wingleader was about all he could see himself being comfortable with in the future.
So, as attractive as the goldrider was, she came with far too many strings attached. And he wasn't thinking of the little boy she had brought with her. I could catch her, even if you don't court her, Portenth suddenly pointed out. I am an excellent bronze, Coreanth could certainly do worse. J'lin grimaced at the thought of Sa'kor as Weyrleader. He was a fine wingleader, good at keeping the sometimes flighty greens and blues in line, but he always seemed to be out to prove something, and was excessively aggressive as a result. He didn't have a problem with the general idea of a brownrider Weyrleader, but Sa'kor specifically? That bothered him a little.
Morgaith will not beat me, Portenth said, scornfully. Monketh might, if he wants it more, but Morgaith will not. It was unusual for Portenth to admit that another bronze might defeat him before a flight, so J'lin paid closer attention to Ol'ver.

---- J'ain of blue Ansith ---- [/b] Once Eyrlaina had acknowledged the bluerider's courtesy, J'ain relaxed ever so slightly, smiling and bowing in an offhanded fashion as she backed away from the junior weyrwoman and the others seeking to greet her. She felt like she'd been granted a reprieve. Time to have a touch of fun, she thought, something to take my mind off this sharding dress.After a moment of quiet, Ansith gave the equivalent of a draconic laugh. Good luck with that. The bluerider slid through gaps between people, only claiming a glass of wine and stopping at an out-of-the way vantage from which to watch the festivities. She didn't wonder why the drink so quickly stilled her irritation, didn't think about the way her inner tremble ceased. She'd needed that drink more than she would like to admit. A dance? Ansith prompted. The drink first, J'ain affirmed. ---- Breda of green Norrath ---- If you're hungry, go to the feast, Norrath told Hers firmly. The greenrider was in her weyr, not exactly dressed for a party, but at least in a clean white tunic and new wherhide jacket. Added to the dark brown leather pants and comfortably-worn calf high boots she also wore, dissatisfaction in her appearance was not what had kept Breda sitting on her bed for so long. It was dread of a purely-social situation when she still felt like moping around her weyr. Drills were a matter of duty, but the new goldrider's feast didn't feel as necessary. Why did it have to be Dannie? Why can't I just go ask a drudge to bring me something?Aside the fact that I'm a green? Dry humor resonated in Norrath's mindvoice. Just go. Don't push yourself. Get a plate, eat, maybe a drink or two. That's all I'm asking. The green tried to hide her worries beneath the cajoling. Hers had never been big on parties, but now... Breda got off her bed with a long-suffering sigh, stamping her feet to settle the stockings more comfortably in her boots. Fine. But that's it. Just don't expect anything else. The greenrider made it into the Living Cavern, and felt like she was moving through a bubble of solitude. Mechanically she got a plate, ate half the meat and vegetables, and lost her appetite. She sat there chasing a roll around the plate with her fork idly, listening to the music in spite of herself. A voice at her elbow made her look up. "May I have this dance?" J'ain asked, smiling warmly as she held out a hand. "You can lead." "Errr..." Breda wasn't sure she liked the idea. She knew that J'ain was a bluerider, and thought for a moment that her green might have been caught by what's-his-name once or twice- Ansith, Norrath supplied. And no, not yet. I would remember. What was that supposed to mean? J'ain didn't wait for a response, but took the woman's hand and pulled her helpfully from her chair toward a clear area. "We should have switched outfits," the bluerider said cheerfully. Breda couldn't think of anything to say; she was too busy not meeting the other wingrider's eyes. It became clear in short order that she was not up to leading the dance, so the assistant candidatemaster smoothly took over. If Mine is too pushy, I will tell her to back off,[/color] Ansith abruptly told Norrath. It's alright,[/color] Norrath replied softly. I think she needs this. She's relaxing a little...---- Kadia of gold Rusith ---- Kadia's limp was more pronounced than usual as she belatedly entered the Living Caverns; today, she was using the hated cane. Its wood was polished from long Turns of use- but not by her. It had been a 'gift' when she'd left Telgar Weyr, from the healer (who never honestly expected her to use it). She hadn't been able to work the buttons on her old Gather dress, so she was decked out in dark brown dress slacks and a heavily embroidered blue tunic instead. From the looks of it, nobody had missed her; the fact was that some people were already clustered around the new goldrider. Kadia raised her good arm in a half-wave, smiling brightly just in case her arrival had been noticed. She didn't want to interrupt anything though- this was a feast in honor of Eyrlaina and Coreanth's arrival, after all- so she stepped instead toward a brownriding wingleader; one that was scowling at Ol'ver. That muscle-head was full of bark and bite, from all Kadia had seen of him. Not that he was a bad sort, just... not very nice. There'd been a recent complaint about his attitude, though according to discreet inquiries the man was usually self-controlled. "Sa'kor, if you have a moment, I'd like to speak with you." Subtlety never really was your strong point, Rusith snorted. ---- Sa'kor of brown Morgaith ---- "The duty is mutual," Sa'kor managed curtly to Ol'ver, before mentally boiling about Eyrlaina's apparent disinterest. He'd been too obvious, and he was only a brownrider. He'd been so certain that she wasn't that type of goldrider. He was too arrogant to consider that his own demeanor was probably a good part of the reason she'd turned away. I warned you,[/color] Morgaith said with a mental shrug. Upon being addressed by the goldrider he'd disregarded (due to her tardiness), Sa'kor's head whipped around from grimacing at Ol'ver to blink at Kadia. "Of course, Weyrwoman," he said, saluting briskly. "I'm at your service." The asymmetrical gaze regarded him, and Kadia started explaining what she'd been told. After listening to his side of the story, and unofficially reproving him for the way he'd spoken to a male greenrider in his wing, the goldrider walked away. Sa'kor couldn't even fake a smile now; the best he could do was a straight face. He envied Ol'ver, really. At least the pretty younger goldrider was looking at him. I'll just have to plan phase two, he thought grimly. |
