There are IC rules that candidates and weyrlings are expected to follow, but if you like an element of reality in your play, feel free to break one or several of them. Chores are optional if the character has a trade- they can choose to work in their trade rather than perform chores.
CO = Candidates only
WO = Weyrlings only
Generally Speaking: What to Do
Chores include Healer and Dragonhealer assistance, gathering medical and spice herbs, cutting wood, mending clothes and various other things, WO: grading (and sorting and sacking) firestone, WO: butchering help, kitchen assistance, laundry help, CO: mentoring weyrbrats, Harper assistance, cleaning the bathrooms, serving in the Living Cavern, tending herdbeasts, running messages, tending glows, scribing (for the literate), garden work, and any menial labor the instructors assign.
Generally Speaking: What Not to Do
Some actions will bring punishment, depending upon the severity of the issue. Behaviors resulting in harm to a human, a dragon, or property will be dealt with much more sternly, while exceptions may be made for extenuating circumstances (such as if a weyrling enters a fight with the intent to break it up; in the case of slacking, if some injury is present; etc). Repeated misbehavior earns increasingly harsh punishment, especially for multiple instances of the same infraction- the hope being to scare miscreants into not repeating misconduct.
Fortunately, most people learn from their mistakes. If a day of punishment coincides with a restday, chores will continue all day between the ninth and fifth candlemarks, except for taking meals and absolutely essential activities (feeding or caring for pets and mindmates). Please be aware that the following list is for demonstration only, and is by no means comprehensive.
First offense is a Warning. Second offense warrants two extra candlemarks of chores instead of Free Time in the evening for a day. Third offense means no Free Time at all for three days. Fourth offense would be no Free Time for a sevenday.
First offense is no Free Time for a day. Second offense would get three days of no Free Time and half rations for a day. Third offense warrants no Free Time, with bathroom-cleaning duty for a sevenday, and two consecutive days of half rations. Fourth offense means no Free Time, bathroom-cleaning duty for ten days, one instance of public humiliation (made to stand during mealtime in the Living Cavern while the crime is announced and everyone stares), and three consecutive days of half rations.
First offense is three days of no Free Time, with bathroom-cleaning duty, and one instance of public humiliation. Second offense is a sevenday of no Free Time, with bathroom-cleaning duty, one instance of public humiliation, and three consecutive days of bread and water rations. Third offense is eleven days of no Free Time, bathroom-cleaning duty, one instance of public humiliation, one day without meals, and three days to follow of bread and water rations. Fourth offense is two sevendays of no Free Time, bathroom-cleaning duty, one instance of public humiliation, two consecutive days without meals, and one restday sometime during the punishment period spent in utter isolation (WO: dragon will be instructed not to mindspeak their bonded; individual will be placed in a holding cell).
<3 Just remember - IC actions equal IC consequences!
But only if they get caught. <3
