02.14.3189 ((date added by Sher)) It was late evening the day after the flitts had hatched. Julim's twin blues had decided they were going to play before sleeping again. The antics had most people keeping their heads low while Julim was laying on his bunk laughing. He couldn't help it. His two little blue flitts were chasing each other around the room squealing threats and shrieking in fear. It looked quite dreadful until you realized they were taking turns. They never actually connected with each other despite the threats and squeals and talon waving. It was all a game to them. He had made a ball for them, small enough to be clutched in one fore foot. He had thought he was going to toss it for them - they had a far better idea and used it to battle over. Occasionally they let him throw it, but they seemed happier to just keep him watching them. "What am I going to call you two? Zip and Zoom? Bright and Light? or maybe Chaos and Mayhem?" He shook his head, "NO not chaos and mayhem. I'd really rather you didn't try to live up to names like those!" "Hey, has anyone else come up with names for their flitts?"

Eavan had just gotten done taking a nice relaxing bath. She had on her typical night clothes which were slightly clinging to her and was using a towel to dry her unruly curly hair. She could hear the commotion coming from the main barracks room. She hoped her little bronze was alright. He had been sleeping on her bunk when she had went to take a bath.
As soon as she entered the sleeping room she had to duck thanks to the antics of the two blue twins. "Shards." She said with a grin as she kept her head down and moved towards her bunk. She saw Julim laughing on his bunk which was just across the walkway from hers. "Did you instigate this little quarrel, Julim?" She asked laughing as the blues chased and yelled at each other.
"I don't know, Julim. Chaos and Mayhem seem to fit them quite nicely." The towel she was using was in her face, so she didn't see the flits flying towards her until the last second. A small yelp escaped her throat as she jerked out of the way, lost balance and landed directly on Julim's legs. "Shards! Yeah, those names certainly fit. Sorry Julim." Eavan said moving off his legs and given one of them a pat, but staying on the edge of the bed until it was safe enough to move to her own bed.
"Well, I named mine Karthik. Not sure if that helps you any. I probably should have named mine Scaredy, but I'm hoping he'll grow out of this frightened of everything phase." She said as she looked over at her bunk to where the dark bronze was sleeping deeply. His belly was full which made him oblivious to the antics of his brother. Thank Faranth for that, otherwise he would probably have been hiding again and she'd have to look for him.

As distracting as the two blue firelizards were, Ophelia attempted to ignore them for the most part. Instead, her attention was directed down to the light brown firelizard that crawled curiously around her bunk. She was laying with her back against the wall and one hand propping up her head, so that her eyes followed the antics of the small creature. Without her knowledge or intention, a rather soft smile had crept across her face, casting her expression into an almost pretty light. Then again, Ophelia's features had always been sharply beautiful rather than soft and feminine, like Eavan.
"Be careful," she warned the brown as he neared the edge of the bed. Carefully extending his muzzle over the edge, Amaroq's eyes whirled dizzyingly as he glanced down at the floor. "Amaroq," she called softly and, with a squeak, the brown glanced up at her. "Amaroq." Quickly, the little brown clawed his way over to Ophelia, pulling himself up to curl into a tight ball on her chest. "There's my boy," she murmured as she handed him a piece of meat and stroked his little head. At the moment she was working on training him to know his own name. After that, they would move onto harder skills. Despite her plans, Ophelia couldn't help but stare at Amaroq, even as he gazed at her with adoring eyes. Was this what a bond felt like? She felt as though she could constantly feel what the little firelizard was feeling, which meant that most of the time she felt protective over him.
Absently, she heard the sound of someone stepping out of the bathing quarters, and heard the sounds of the twins quarrelling. Ophelia glanced up but, upon noticing Eavan, merely gazed back down at Amaroq. The brown's eyelids has squeezed shut and he was now snoring, as deeply asleep as Karthik. "You better be careful, those twins will get you into trouble," she announced absently to Julim, right as Eavan made her comment about the firelizards. A second later and Ophelia heard the squeal. Unable to contain herself, she glanced up just in time to see Eavan sprawled across Julim's lap. A short, curt laugh burst forth from Ophelia's lips as she lifted her head slightly.
"Well, well, the prim and proper Eavan shows her true colors," Ophelia mused aloud, grinning impishly at the pair. "Karthik, huh? I named mine Amaroq, though as Eavan said," she agreed grudgingly, "I don't know how much good that will do you."

Patala was sitting curled up on her bunk, her knees pulled up to her chest. She was finally dressed in her own things again, her meager belongings having been sent up from Foothills the day before, and she felt a little more comfortable knowing that she wasn't walking around in borrowed clothing. She had been constantly worried about ripping or staining something.
The flitts in the room were extremely amusing, and she had been giggling helplessly since they started playing with the ball. They were rather like kittens with wings, and considering how much trouble a litter of felines could get into, that should probably be a sobering thought. Still, she thought the little ones seemed to be on different sleep schedules already, so hopefully they would not cooperate in getting into trouble.
"I'm no good with names," she volunteered after the other two girls mentioned what they had named their pets. "I was always calling the runners things based on their colors. Not very original." She had been amazed on arriving at the barracks that so many of the candidates had acquired flitt eggs, but she certainly wasn't jealous. She had too much to do learning to settle into the Weyr. She wouldn't be able to handle a little bundle of trouble like a flitter at the same time.
"Chaos and Mayhem probably fit pretty well, though," she added, agreeing with Eavan. "And at least people will get fair warning when they hear you calling out the names."

Eavan ducked once more as the two blues came sweeping over Julim’s bunk. She was enjoying their antics, but she hoped they would settle down eventually. Otherwise it would be very hard to sleep with all that ruckus. Eavan looked over at Ophelia as she made her glib remark. Instead of getting defensive or offended she simply smiled devilishly. ”Doesn’t matter at this point, now does it? Since we’re not allowed to do anything yet.” She gave Julim a wink and his leg another pat before running her hand up to his knee and then moved over to her bunk.
”Amaroq…that’s a good name.” Eavan said and meant. The brown was sleeping as deeply as her Karthik was. She had gained a bit more respect for Ophelia after seeing how well she handled her lizard. Things were still rocky between them, always would be, but at least they could talk at least half-way civilly towards each other. Carefully, Eavan shifted her bronze into her lap without waking him up.
Patala then joined in the conversation. ”Might not be original, but at least other people would know who is who. Though, I don’t think that will work with your flits, Julim. Blue and Blue would get very confusing I’m sure.” She finished towel drying her hair and then laid the towel on the floor. Normally she would have placed it in the dirty laundry bin, but it was still too dangerous at the moment to get up and walk around. ”A fair warning is always nice, but there may be better names for them than Chaos and Mayhem. They sort of squabble like a pair of old uncles or bickering harpers.”

Julim was speechless. Worse, he could tell he was blushing. He was never going to live this one down. Making little chirps of concern his two little flitts glided in to land on him, cocking their heads to see what was wrong. Yes, that was going to make him even more obvious, wasn't it. His life was over.
He had been acting completely innocently! He hadn't been flirting or doing anything a 10 turn old wouldn't do when Eavan landed on his lap all damp and in night clothes and smelling like soap and girl. As if that wasn't enough, she'd groped him! Well, close enough to a grope considering how carefully he'd been following the rules for many sevendays.
That would have been enough to have him reaching for pillows to put in front of himself, but then Ophelia had to get involved. He was going to put salt in her klah = or in her bed. Every head in the barracks had turned to look at him then and he could feel his face heating up.
Then he got groped again! Had he really flirted enough with Ophelia and Eavan to deserve this? The lighter blue decided he needed defending and opened his wings and tried to look fierce, standing on his stomach. the darker blue fellow nuzzled his chin, trying to make Julim feel better.
"I'm protected now Ophelia. Chaos and Mayhem will keep Eavan's hands off my poor defenseless and innocent self." Please oh please let no one have noticed the blush or the moments of being unable to speak? Noone liked light and bright for names, so I guess Chaos and Mayhem it is.

As an unfamiliar voice spoke up, Ophelia glanced over at Patala, recognizing her as the herdbeast assistant who had been searched by J'ain herself. She seemed like a quiet, innocent girl, and Ophelia was actually a bit surprised that she'd spoken at all. But then again, the twin blues were causing quite a bit of trouble, which would have sparked anyone's attention. She cocked her head gently to the side and studied the other girl as she spoke, listening to the way she worded certain things and structured her sentences. Interesting. It seemed she only spoke about what she was certain of, which was herd beasts, instead of leaping into unknown territory. Ophelia had to admire her for that.
Unfortunately, Eavan's words distracted her before she could respond to Patala. A carefully arched brow was Eavan's response as Ophelia studied her, slightly amused at her antics. "I suppose not," she murmured, "but then again, since you are everyone's favorite little candidate, I'm sure you could get away with more than most of us." It was both a slight barb and the utter truth. She already knew that the Jr. Weyromwan, Eyrlaina, thought highly of Eavan, and if she'd interpreted J'lin's actions accurately then he thought well of her too. No one would accuse Eavan of anything right off the bat if she decided to do something. She merely nodded her head as Eavan agreed with the name, stroking Amaroq's head as she did so.
Fortunately for Julim, and perhaps everyone, Ophelia studiously ignored the intentional flirtation as put forth by Eavan. "I can see that," she responded as she noticed the antics of the twin blues, one crouching over him and the other nuzzling against him. The blush on the boy's face, however, did not go unnoticed. With an innocent blink, Ophelia cocked her head to the side. "Are you warm, Julim? Should I try to get a breeze blowing?" A devious look glowed in her hazel eyes, but her expression remained pleasantly neutral. Without waiting for a response, Ophelia glanced over at Patala. "What do you think, Patala? Doesn't he look a little flushed?"

Eavan laughed as the twin blues landed on their master and tried to look fierce. As if she would ever really hurt Julim, but it was fun to make him squirm a bit. After all the boy had been rather flirty and turn about is fair play. Deep down, Eavan was a flirt, she knew it and she also liked it. However, being a candidate she had to keep herself in check. A little flirting and teasing never hurt anyone though.
Eavan looked at a very red Julim with a shocked face. "You?! Defenseless and innocent. How do I know you didn't make Chaos and Mayhem run into me at the right time to knock me onto your lap?" She asked indignantly. Karthik was starting to snore loudly and that made her giggle and lose the angry face she was trying to give Julim.
"Perhaps, Ophelia, but just because I'd be the last to get into trouble doesn't mean I'm going to chance it. I'm not an idiot and I'm too mature for that." Eavan stated in a matter of fact way. Ophelia then mentioned that Julim looked a bit warm. Eavan looked at the boy and he was rather flushed and looked a bit uncomfortable. "I think you're right, Ophelia. Do you need a cold glass of water? Or bath?" She knew it was slightly mean to tease the poor boy, but he was just so adorably caught off guard at the moment.

Prinner hid a grin against the warm little body of his flitt. He was having major troubles with a name and was having to take special care of his flitt. The white was smaller then the others and got tired quicker.
Prinner had taken to carrying him around between two layers of shirts. The flitt stayed warm that way and when he got hungry Prinner could feed him right away. He was doing his best to make sure the littlest flitt survived to become the strongest and smartest of the group.
He had some sympathy for Julim, but not much. The bigger boy's flirtation with both of the older girls was just asking for trouble. Now he was starting to get it. Prinner would sit back and enjoy the show, keeping his mouth firmly shut.
------
Julim was feeling a bit outmatched here. He didn't like it very much and was rather nervous about making a challenging response. He didn't trust Eavan to not respond in kind. Maybe staying quiet was a good idea?
He wasn't very good at that.

Patala saw the poor boy start blushing at the teasing coming from Eavan and Ophelia both at the same time. Was flirting the only thing they were willing to work together at? The hold girl got a sudden vivid image at that idea, taken to its natural conclusion, and put her own face in her hands at about the same time Julim's flitters decided to protect him from the girls.
When Ophelia asked her if Julim looked flushed, a very embarrassed Patala looked up at his face. Yes, he certainly did, and Patala hoped her own blush was attributed by the other candidates to her hold upbringing. "Yes, he looks a little overheated," she admitted, not daring to look at either of the other girls. Where had that idea come from?
Looking at the blushing Julim was almost as bad, though, and Patala darted her gaze away quickly. Prinner was uninvolved and completely safe to look at. "Have you named your little white?" she asked him, trying to change the subject. Ophelia and Eavan would never get along that well anyway.

Prinner smiled at Patala, glad for a chance to talk.
"I keep trying to think of a name that fits. He is so amazing looking and he is a little cuddler too. I thought about Opal or starlight - but then I thought they sounded a little too cute? Do you have any ideas? He is little and shy and really great looking."
Carefully, he turned the little white so Panala could see the perfectly formed features. The flitt was sleeping, completely relaxed in Prinner's careful hands.
Well Prinner thought he was the best looking flitt ever, anyway.

As Eavan continued flirting, Ophelia could only watch with veiled amusement. As goofy as Julim was, she saw him more as an errant sibling who needed scolding rather than as a potential suitor. Still, to each his or her own. When she mentioned the bath, however, a curt laugh burst forth from Ophelia's lips. "You're on your own if you want to bathe him, Eavan," she told the other girl in that same matter-of-fact voice. There was no malice in her tone, however, or her expression. It was all up to how Eavan chose to take the comment.
At that moment, however, the back of Ophelia's neck prickled. Even though she didn't look it, she was almost always constantly aware of what was going on around her. Subtle gestures, expressions, words whispered or only barely formulated. And at that moment she became aware of Patala, who had hid her face in her hands. Was the weyr atmosphere too much for her? A frown creased Ophelia's brow as she studied the other girl, but then she intentionally directed the conversation elsewhere. No, she didn't seem...
"Wait," Ophelia announced, and eased Amaroq onto her bunk as she sat up. The brown shifted restlessly in his sleep, clearly disapproving, but then quickly dropped back into a deep, deep sleep. Letting her legs slide over the edge of the bunk, Ophelia pegged Patala with her most intense gaze. "What's got you all hot and bothered?" Perhaps that wasn't quite the best wording to use, but it still served it's purpose.

"Not me!". Prinner said innocently, eyes wide open. He had never told them he was 16, they probably thought he was 14 or so. Way better that way for now.
"Maybe all the blunt weyr talk embarrassed her?" his expression implied that it had embarrassed him.
I was just asking her to help figure out a name for a white flitt. I can't come up with anything other then Opal.
-------------
Julim was impressed. That was very good verbal dancing the kid was doing . Unfortunately Ophelia was a better dancer. If it got the attention away from Julim though he was going to owe Prinner.
The Brothers were collapsed on his chest now. They had worn themselves out. He was so lucky to have them, and the names were fun too.

Eavan out right cackled at Ophelia’s next comment. ”Oh no, Ophelia, Julim’s a big boy he can bathe himself just fine I’m sure.” She decided that perhaps they should lay off of the poor boy now. After all, she didn’t want to aggravate him too much. Patala also seemed a bit perturbed by their line of conversation and tried her best to direct it elsewhere. Eavan had to remind herself that not everyone was weyrbred.
”If you think this kind of talk is blunt Prinner, you should go to the Dining Hall during the wee hours of the morning.” She stated in a matter of fact voice. Eavan, though she was pretty proper, was not unaccustomed to the more…rough talk of the weyr. Then again, she had lived here her whole life so she had the advantage.
”I don’t think Opal is a bad name, especially not for a white flit. Perhaps if you’re wanting something that mean’s white, you could go with Blizzard or Snow.” That was about all the suggestions she had for the boy. Julim was off the hook with her…for now. Until he got brave enough to flirt with her again and then she’d continue flirting back.

Patala felt trapped when Ophelia looked at her. "Hot and bothered?..." she asked nervously. She glanced over at Prinner, grateful for his alternate explanation, but..."it's not all that blunt, exactly," she had to admit. She looked away from Ophelia's face, not wanting to explain the real reason for her blush.
The other candidates were just flirting. She really didn't care as long as they didn't begin describing what they wanted to do to each other in lurid detail. And maybe she wouldn't mind that exactly, but her mind did not need to go there again.
Evasively, she decided to try a partial truth. "I thought it was kind of funny that you and Eavan seem friendlier when you're both teasing Julim," she said, still not quite meeting the other girl's eyes.
She looked back over at Prinner. "I actually really like the name Opal," she told him, hoping that the subject was now dropped. "Unless you think he would be offended at being named after a gemstone."
