Kogran managed to finish up his second fur and even managed to start another one. Of course, it seemed that Eavan had finished up all the others. Conflicting. He was pretty happy that he didn't need to do it all, but he really didn't want to let Eavan see that. As far as he was able to notice, she didn't really know that he tended to slack. If he could keep it up (uuugh) then maybe he wouldn't be looked down upon by everyone else. Not that it was too bad, he supposed....
"So you know all that because your family does kitchen duties?" Kogran asked as he finished up soaping and scrubbing his third fur. "That's pretty cool. My mom used to do kitchen duty too, back in Nerat, but I don't think she ever really told us what we were eating or anything,"
He rinsed out the fur just as she told him to finish it, and he nodded, got up, and rang it out. "So you lived in the Weyr your whole life huh? Isn't that kinda boring? Don't you want to see what other places are like?" He pulled the fur out the other end of the ringer and held it up. A couple drops fell on the floor and he looked at them with a detached lack of understanding before he hung it up.

Eavan spread the wet furs evenly over the drying lines, not because it would make the drying faster but because she was a bit over compulsive about things being exact distances apart. It was an odd trait she’d had since she was a child. ”I know all that because I get kitchen chores a lot of times, so I’ve got to help make such meals before.” She explained with a smile. ”And it’s just my mother. My father died right after I was born.”
All that was left was the one fur Kogran was finishing up ringing out. ”I guess technically, not my whole life. I was born in Crom, but my mother moved to Sunset very soon after I was born. I don’t think I was even three months old.” Eavan laughed slightly. ”The weyr is never boring, I promise you that. At least not to me, anyways. As far as other places go I have been to Lemos Hold a time or two. For now I’m quite content and happy being where I am. Besides, if I impress no place will be too far for me to visit.” She really did hope to impress this time, but even if she didn’t she wasn’t at the oldest age a candidate could be to impress.
”Well, my friend, I believe we are done. How about we go get that food now? I’m quite hungry and the warm food will make my aching foot feel better.” Eavan said as she put the cleaning supplies away. ”Okay, that might be an exaggeration, but it’ll still taste amazing.” Eavan gave the furs one more inspection and then turned to leave the washing room. ”I think you’ve the makings of a good washing man, Kogran. Just need to pick up the speed a bit, otherwise you did a good job.” She complimented as she hobbled down towards the kitchens.

Julim's chore for the day was to keep the Dining Cavern clean and make sure there was klah in the pot. He was rather enjoying the chore as it gave him a chance to see people come and go. He was usually given chores that needed muscle to do, since he was clearly strong enough to do them.
This was light work in a warm room with people to talk to. He was a new face and that usually meant people wanted to talk to him. He was collecting a good group of names and faces - maybe that was the goal? Was the headwoman and candidate master here clever enough to want to get a new candidate known to everyone quickly? He was certainly feeling more at home and welcome then he was when this morning.
Of course that wasn't difficult since he'd gotten here yesterday. It had been a long day, between the time difference and having the headwoman check through his belongings and giving him more warm clothing and an extra bedfur. He'd needed them all too.
He was in the kitchen getting a fresh pot of Klah when Eavan and Kogran arrived. He knew them from the barracks but had forgotten their names overnight. "Do you two want any of the klah before I take it out?" he asked. One of the cooks was making more but it took a bit before it had brewed enough to taste good.

Kogran listened to Eavan and nodded along as he watched her finish up before they headed out. He couldn't help but still find it weird that she didn't mind having not been many places, but he had to admit, she was right. If they impressed, they'd be able to visit any place in Pern. Kogran could get used to the... awkward and gross parts of having a dragon if they could go anywhere. If the dragon wanted to? As near as Kogran could tell from what everyone said, having a dragon was like being in love but stronger. Then again, Kogran had never really been in love so....
Wait, he had the makings of a good washing man? Was she joking? Huh. "If you say so. It's really not very fun and I'm covered in little hairs," he said, looking down at himself as he walked. Really, it wasn't too bad. He hadn't badly damaged anything that he had washed, but he had about a half a handful of hair on his arms and shirt.
When they entered the dining cavern, Kogran was taken off guard by Julim (or "that new new guy") being there already, since he had been paying too much attention to Eavan. He looked at him for a moment and then smiled. Klah? Yes!
"Yeah, that'd be great! Thanks!"

You couldn't help but grin back at the kid. Julim did, as he got a couple mugs for his fellow candidates.
Kogran looked like he had been helping in the stables? he had fur on him. When Julim got closer he could smell the distinctive laundry room smell. Poor kid. That was an annoying and wet chore. Julim preferred carrying food sacks, the cooks tended to want to feed anyone who was helping.
Eavan looked a little more curly and flushed then usual. He'd bet she had been doing laundry as well. It was going to be fun seeing just how curly that hair of hers could get when summer heat and humidity got here.
Julim got himself a mug too, why not have a klah break with them? He could see if anything was needed from here.

Once in the kitchen they were greeted by none other than a fellow candidate. He also had klah, fresh klah! ”Why thank you, Julim.” She said as she took the mug and sat down with the two boys. They were both good boys she decided. Julim was weyrbred which meant he was a tiny bit easier to get along with. Only for the fact that he knew where she was coming from. Kogran was a good lad, but he was hold bred and a lot of the stuff Eavan did probably didn’t make much sense to him.
Kogran wasn’t as hard a worker as he could probably be, but Eavan couldn’t really fault him for it and she hoped that after living here a bit he would develop a more mature working attitude. If he impressed a dragon he would be up to his eyeballs in chores and work. Eavan hadn’t lived in a weyr all her life to not know how much responsibility and work a baby dragon took.
”How has your day been, Julim?” She asked as she took a drink of the klah. It was quite warm and delicious. She tried spotting her mother but she was probably busy cooking this or that this close to diner time. ”Think you can let us in on what’s for dinner tonight?” She asked with a wink.

Taking a hint from his fellow candidates, Kogran took a seat and wrapped his hands around the warm mug of klah. Always nice on a cold day, even if today wasn't as cold as it could be... so... always nice on days? Good thing he didn't say that one out loud.
Kogran looked over at Eavan as she spoke. Meals weren't a secretive thing here, were they? Besides that....
"Don't you know what they're serving?" Kogran asked her, looking from Eavan to Julim, slightly confused. "I thought you said you knew."

Well now, wasn't that interesting? She said she knew what was for dinner earlier, hmm? So either she was trying to make conversation with him or his cuteness sent the knowledge right out of her head.
Julim had no problem with either possibility. The only question was how much should he tease her about it? A lot. Of course.
"She finds me so handsome and charming that I made her completely forget." Julim said seriously, keeping a straight face. Well, mostly a straight face. One side of his mouth was turned a little up-wards, showing that he had dimples.
"Its the long hair. and my complete seriousness and rule following behavior."
If Kogran believed him, Julim was in danger of completely loosing it and laughing out loud. Or if Eavan looked stunned enough by his comment.

Eavan had to sit there for a second and think. ”Oh goodness, I guess I do know what we’re having. The herdbeast, herb bread, and sharp cheese and tubers. Then for desert it’s the fruit tarts. Silly me.” She said as she mockingly knocked her hand upside her head. Eavan wasn’t quite sure what had made her forget so easily. Maybe it was the fact her foot was still hurting or perhaps because she was actually getting to socialize with other candidates.
Julim’s next comment threw her off guard for only a moment and if either of them were looking during that moment, they would have saw her eyes widened. Quickly she pulled herself together and put on a coy smile. ”You got me. A man who knows all the proper manners and behaves according to the rules just sends tingles all down my spine. If that’s not enough I’m in the company of two charming gentlemen.” Eavan said as she threw her arms up as if in shock of her precarious situation.
Eavan giggled a bit as she took another sip of her klah. ”So, now that we’ve established I do know what we’re having, the better question is…When is it going to be ready? That’s something I wouldn’t know unless I was cooking it, so I’ll have no grief from either of you.” She pointed a finger at each of them in a teasingly threatening sort of why.

Kogran had an overwhelming feeling that he was missing something. At the very least, he was sure that the two people he was talking with had talked to each other in the past. He almost took it all seriously; Julim seemed so sincere that it was hard not to, but even as Eavan played along, he couldn't help but feel like he was listening to an inside joke. Especially at having himself referred to as "charming."
Best not to worry much about that. If she was joking, that was fine and if she was mocking him, he probably deserved it.
He nodded slightly as Eavan asked when dinner would be. That made sense. He sipped his klah and when she was done speaking, he looked at her. He hadn't offended her, had he? "I wasn't trying to give you grief."

"No Kogran, I was the one giving her grief. Just a little. I've been so polite while working in here that it feels good to be able to joke a little. Everyone outranks us and anyone can report us for being rude. So - I'm polite."
Julim sipped his klah, almost the first he'd had today
"I think I'm supposed to set up for dinner too - so dinner can't be too soon. I'm still just working with klah and light snacks."

Eavan giggled at the two of them, mainly Kogran with his cute naivety. ”You boys are two much. I was just kidding Kogran. Neither of you are giving me any grief. You don’t have to fuss so.” She took another sip of her klah, enjoying the deep aroma and the warmth. It was almost wonderful enough to make her stop thinking about dropping that pot on her foot. She still felt rather silly for that, but there was nothing she could do about it except shrug it off. So that’s what she intended to do.
”Being polite does have its advantages. I for one would never want to be on the bad side of anyone who could determine my fate. It is nice to not always have to be polite and proper, though.” She said giving Julim a smile. ”Just think, boys, before too long we could be the next generation of dragonriders. Then our days of being lowly candidates will seem like no hardship at all.” Eavan fervently hoped that was what would happen.
”You made this klah, Julim? Excellent job. Oh, I wish dinner would come sooner rather than later. I didn’t realize how hungry I was till I stopped working.” As if to prove a point her stomach growled rather loudly. Eavan put a hand over it, trying to muffle the sound. ”Really hungry apparently.” She stated with an embarrassed laugh.

Kogran played with his cup of klah, slowly spinning it around in little circles on the table as he looked between Julim and Eavan.
"I don't get the whole politeness things" Kogran said, looking down at his half-finished beverage."I mean, being nice to people makes sense. I don't like being mean to people. But they're not really the same, are they? That's what I don't get." he paused to look at his companions, but being awful at reading expressions, he didn't get anything useful from them. "It has to do with their rank, right? You should show people who are above you special niceness?"
It was yet another one of those implied things that in his twenty turns, Kogran hadn't been able to really understand. Noen of his friends in the holds had ever really been able to say much beyond "It's stupid and there isn't a point to any of this," and Kogran would agree, at least, for a while. But the rule-followers were much nicer people, it seemed. Besides that, there was always something Kogran didn't get. Maybe these two would be able to make it make sense.

That was an interesting question. He was going to try to get Kogran and Ophelia talking someday. Ophelia was another who kept making him think when he least expected it.
"Manners are a little bit about rank. They are also about not hurting people's feelings and about keeping us all able to work together."
Julim paused for a sip of klah, trying to think how to make this clear.
"Say if I didn't get much sleep last night because I'm worried about the hatching? If I don't have the habit of minding my manners deeply part of me then everything I say will come out grouch and tired and worried. So everyone I talk to will have to deal with my emotions. If THEY are tired it would be easy to think I'm being mean or disrespectful." Hm. That had made sense to him, did it make sense to Kolaris?
"You are mostly fine with people because you are almost always in a good mood. Almost no one minds having a good mood thrust at them. It is the bad moods, like me being tired and worried or Ophelia thinking we're all against her or - " he'd run out of bad things to mention. "Or Prinner when he hasn't had anything to eat for a couple candlemarks."
He had to grin as he thought of a last one "OR worst of all? T'prin on a bad hair day." He gave a fake and overdone shudder, his face imitating the exaggerated horror that he'd seen T'prin use.

Eavan listened closely to how Julim answered Kogran. She realized that the two of them were a lot alike. That was quite refreshing compared to how her and Ophelia got along. She wished that things were different between her and the other girl, but they weren't and there was nothing to be done about it.
"I agree with what Julim's said. Manner's aren't so hard if you think about it this way. Treat others how you'd like them to treat you. If you keep that in mind then you'll do just fine." Eavan commented taking another sip of her klah. She could just imagine what Ophelia would say if she could hear Julim and herself teaching Kogran about manners.
"Hm...I don't know Julim. There are some mornings when the last thing I want is some extremely happy person talking to me." She said with a slight giggle. Happy people were better than grumpy ones, but sometimes if she was in a bad mood, the last thing she wanted was a happy person shoving their happiness in her face.
