((Credit to Sporelett for her free lineart I modified for our uses. Hatching order and egg contents were established on this thread on Gaia. Hatching Order
1. J'lin = Solar orange egg with purple cap 2. Kogran = Pale blue on pale green egg 3. Ophelia = Yellow spotted blue egg 4. Julim = Pink and brown streaker egg 5. Prinner = Gray egg with white band 6. Eavan = White egg with mahogany freckles However you figure the characters get to the Living Caverns, please respect the hatching order. Random = fair. This isn't necessarily a posting order, just the order that the eggs will hatch in. Once the next character on the list has arrived and the previous one's egg is done hatching, we can move on to the next one. I hope nobody is disappointed! And if parts of this post get a little incoherent, forgive me, I've been awake for about ten hours too long.)) 02.13.3189 Primbel was overjoyed at the abundance of beef the last few days had brought. To the stonesmith, meat was a beautiful thing: dripping with fat and its own juices, seasoned, tender, smoky, just bursting with flavor. Sulee seemed to agree. They finished the steak off together, the mastersmith with periodic groans of ecstasy, the firelizard as though she'd never eaten in her entire life. She took the last bite from her human's fork- yes, he shared a utensil with his pet, germs and all- but didn't chew. She stood stock-still on the table, and hummed.Surely the dragon eggs weren't hatching yet? They were hard, weren't they- and none of the riders were getting up from their plates. No. This was something more personal to the old gold flitter. Primbel didn't figure it involved him much; there was enough grilled herdbeast left on the serving platters that he strode up to get a refill. Meanwhile the firelizard was 'finding' her eggs. In the hands of humans, but at least safe, warm, and wobbling. She visited a tall bronzerider with an orange egg, a candidate with a crooked nose (and a pale green egg), a scarred candidate with a blue egg, a candidate with blue eyes and a pink (or was it brown?) egg, a short candidate with a predominately gray egg, and a blond candidate with the freckled white egg. Every last one of them received a brief chirp to interrupt Sulee's humming. She knew where the food was, and her clever little flitter brain directed her back to the Living Caverns, to wait on her eggs to arrive. It was a good sevenday too early for the firelizards to hatch, but hatching they were. A certain solar orange egg with a purple cap seemed to want to go first. Paging J'lin!

J'lin had been planning to carry his little egg in a sling next to him when a few more days had passed. He was pretty sure that the egg wasn't supposed to hatch yet. However, it was shuddering in its box by his hearth, and Portenth was quite certain he was wrong about that.
The bronzerider shook his head. He hadn't gotten any edibles that hatchlings would like to keep around him yet, so he would have to take the egg with him down to get some meat. There should still be some beef left, which the little one would probably prefer to the meatrolls he had expected to feed it. He got out the sling, tucking the rocking egg against his chest as he headed down to the caverns. He probably looked a little odd, but J'lin had never been as concerned with his own appearance as his dragon was with his. Idly, as he walked quickly down to the cavern with the now very active egg, he wondered if this was how pregnant women felt being kicked around by their passengers, though obviously those kicks were from inside.
He was pretty sure that most of the other eggs had been found by candidates, oddly enough. Someone should probably make sure they had noticed what was going on, some of them might be at chores already. That pretty candidate we took outside has one, Portenth informed him. I will make sure she knows her egg is ready. The girl had flattered the bronze quite a bit, so he wanted to make sure she didn't miss out on her little pet.
Girl, mine has a flitter egg and it is hatching. You should check yours, Portenth told his favorite candidate, Eavan. About that time, J'lin was making his way into the living cavern and taking his shaking egg out of the sling. Sitting near a large platter of meat, he held the egg in his lap with one hand, grabbing some food to hold in his other hand. The egg certainly seemed to be progressing quite quickly, and J'lin didn't think it would be very long now.

Julim was sitting in the Candidate barracks, comfortably stretched out, with a comfortable pillow behind his back and a tapestry keeping the cold and rough bits of the wall from his head. The seating area looked good and was being used. It had the unexpected benefit of having people make sure they closed the two layers of door more carefully - since they were seen - and that had made the barracks a warmer place.
So of course he was brooding. Hatching was getting close and so he was spending more time brooding and wishing it were over. It was getting harder to keep the new candidates from seeing his worries and nerves, harder to not inflict his tiredness and grumpiness on people who really didn't deserve it.
He needed a new project. The Weyrling barracks were rapidly getting as clean as they could get. What else was there to do? Preferably something he needed to think about and plan. Physical labor still left his mind free to worry and to wonder who would impress and leave him behind this time.
Sulee's appearance was very welcome. The thought of having his flitt egg hatch pushed everything right out of his head. "Thank you Slue! I'll be right over to the Living Caverns!" He told the Queen as he ran for his egg. There was food there, which they really didn't have much of in the barracks.
Carefully he put the egg inside his tucked in shirt. His coat went on over that - the egg would be fine against him and with the coat over them both. It was strange feeling the egg move against him. He sent thoughts of welcome and happiness to the egg as he hurried as fast as was careful into the caverns.
Oh good! dinner was still out and there was a rider with an egg on his lap, and a platter of meat nearby.
"Hello! I'm Julim, I have another of the flitt eggs" Julim said a little breathlessly as he pulled up another chair. Figuring the rider knew what he was doing, Julim mimicked his posture, putting the pink and brown egg on his lap. He was long past caring his egg was half bright pink, his cares were saved for wanting a healthy inhabitant. There was no stigma attached to what kind of flitt you had.

No sooner than Julim had joined the bronzerider, and the solar orange egg with the dark purple apex gave a vigorous shiver. A tentative tapping vibrated the shell, paused, and started on the opposite side. Stopped; continued elsewhere again. This went on for several breaths. One final, emphatic tap and hairline cracks followed the weak lines the baby firelizard had created. The sides of the egg on J'lin's lap fell away from its contents, exposing a tiny little firelizard of floral green rising on shaky legs. She was still wearing the top part of the egg shell, the purple apex clinging to her headknobs like a flower's blossom to a stem. She was about four inches long, and when she'd opened her egg, thin dribbles of egg fluids oozing down onto the bronzerider's pants. The little green craned her neck to look up at the human she was standing on, in the process losing her so-fashionable cap and falling over on her side. A cheep of pain as she landed on a sharp shard of shell sounded; then her eyes were swirling through the rainbow spectrum of Impression, and she trilled softly. It seemed she liked the 'feel' of his mind, occupied by Portenth as it was. She calculated a path to climb laboriously toward the food, a tiny scratch where the egg shell had scraped her visible along one of her baby ribs. Eavan was brushing her hair when two things happened at once. First, a small gold firelizard came swooping into the candidate barracks humming and Portenth spoke to her also informing her of the impending flit hatching. Surprised by being spoken to by the bronze, Eavan sent back a heart-felt thanks though she wasn’t sure if he heard her or not. Then, excitedly she went to get her egg.
As she brushed the sand off the top of the egg she thought it moved ever so slightly. Quickly she got her warmest coat on and then slipped the egg into extra cloth and then put it inside her coat and held it tightly. With a small spring in her step she made her way to the Living Barracks. Julim was already there with J’lin of course and there was food out for their new arrivals. Eavan took a seat next to the men.
As she was sitting down she noticed that J’lin’s egg had already hatched and from it was a cute little green. ”Oh goodness, she’s a darling. Congrats J’lin.” Eavan said as she sat down at the same table with the men. She had wanted to ask him to convey thanks to Portenth for informing her, but the time didn’t seem appropriate. Carefully she got her egg out of her coat before taking it off. ”Hello Julim. I wonder whose egg will hatch next?” She said looking her spotted egg trying to see if there were any cracks yet.

Kogran was heading back from the washing room. His clothes needed to be washed and he needed practice with it and it was cold and his leaf ball was low on stuffing... so he did chores. By choice. Horrifying! But he was supposed to be growing up and being a dragonrider was all about chores and he wanted to make a good impression... so it was worth it. Right?
When Sulee appeared (not that Kogran knew the little firelizard's name) he was startled momentarily, but surprisingly, he knew what it was all about. His egg! He had been worrying about it for ages. he kept it in a pot filled with sand on the hearth in the barracks, and he was very careful to turn it two or three times per day, and check to see how hard it was. He knew almost nothing about them, but he took hints from the others. He considered one of those slings but... it seemed too risky. he'd probably break it.
Thus, Kogran ran the rest of the way back to the candidate barracks, passing Julim. Kogran stopped when he got inside, and speed-walked to the hearth. He kneeled, and paused as he waited for his hands to stop shaking. The sand rustled slightly, and his hands weren't getting any better, so he simply dug the egg free and pulled it onto his lap. He wiped off the extra sand and he wondered what he was supposed to do.
Hmm. Julim had an egg. Kogran saw it... well, kinda saw it... as they passed each other. he was bringing it somewhere. But where? What had everyone said... to Impress one of these guys, you needed food. Food! Maybe that's where he should go.
Kogran stood up, holding the egg carefully. If he dropped it, would it still hurt the little creature inside, even if it was about to hatch? Kogran didn't want to find out. He held it close to himself and walked as quickly as he dared to the kitchens. He came across J'lin and Julim first, of course, and he almost walked past them before he realized that there was a baby firelizard and an egg with them. They would know! They could help. He positioned himself at the end of the table and wondered what to do or say.
"I have an egg too?"
That worked.

J'lin grinned down at the little green darling with her purple hat. Portenth was pleased with her color through their link, which didn't surprise his rider at all. The bronze had a special fondness for greens after all. He started bringing the meat closer to her when she startled him by falling over. He winced at her cheep of pain, before he felt the light touch in his mind, nowhere near as strong as his link with Portenth. Still, he smiled fondly down at her until he noticed the visible scratch.
He brought the first piece of meat right down to her before she could try to move toward it. She didn't need to open that scratch any wider. Right now, it would probably heal quickly, but if he let her exert herself to get to her food, it might get worse and become a problem if she got startled. Didn't baby fire lizards start flying between almost immediately?
He glanced up at Eavan's word, and grinned cheerfully. He hadn't noticed that he was now all but surrounded by candidates with eggs. "Yes, she's adorable," he agreed. "I hope Portenth agrees, since he was the one who insisted I look for the egg, anyway," but the bronzerider was stroking one delicate wing as he provided food for the empty green belly.
"Do all of you have eggs then?" he asked, looking around amused at the children. While his green was devouring one piece of meat, he began pulling bits of egg off his pants and putting them in his discarded sling. The pants probably weren't ruined, at least for his purposes. He didn't care if they ended up a little stained from the egg fluid, since he only wore them when he was doing dirty work like oiling Portenth, anyway.
"I guess the lizards will be good practice for all of you," he said, amused that so far everyone else with an egg seemed to be a candidate. He was almost mechanically transferring bits of food to the green's mouth as he lightly rubbed her side. J'lin looked down at her again, bemused at how cute she was. Even as biased as he was, the bronzerider had to admit that dragon hatchlings seemed a lot more awkward than this. There was more stumbling and gracelessness, though he supposed that her little scratch proved that fire lizard's were not hatched perfectly coordinated either.

Kogran's egg, an elongated oval of pale green with small ice-hued triangles, started twitching oddly in his hands. Unlike the green's calculated approach to escaping the shell, this baby seemed unwilling to stop the frenzied movements that were meant to break it free. As a result, by the time a particularly vigorous kick burst the hard shell in multiple directions, the little gold hatchling hunched there in his hands seemed to be gasping for breath. She was a good bit larger than her green sister, almost six inches long, but still on the small side. She was a bright buttery hue for the most part, but shaded into a peachy color in places. She didn't immediately realize that she was being held by someone, and stretched her wings first. The translucent membranes between the bones glistened with damp. Her clutch-sibling had reserved strength, refrained from flight, because there was no danger. The baby gold flapped once, sending a blob of egg goo spinning through the air, but she'd expended enough energy getting out of the shell that she was content to sit and rest a moment. Her slender sides were still heaving for breath. Until she smelled something instinctively recognized as food. Faceted eyes finally met Kogran's, and she chirruped curiously, tiny belly rumbling against the shell she sat on. Like most flitters upon hatching, she wanted the reassurance of food. Impression would form with the first offering. The "Warm Heart" Gold to KogranStarting personality: Ditzy, energetic, playful, friendly. [/i]

Prinner made it into the living cavern just as the little queen hatched. He wasn't surprised to see everyone else there, from his reading you needed food when a fire lizard hatched. Weyr born would know that, he'd learned it by reading and asking questions. There was a lot of information on fire lizards in the beast crafters room here.
A queen! Kogran was going to one one popular fellow as his fire lizard grew up, that was for sure. The ride, sitting in the group had a little green and was smiling. Well, who wouldn't be?
Carefully Prinner got himself settled, giving a smile to the kitchen worker bringing out more meat for them. Giving the two hatchlings a quick assessing look he started to cut the meat into the right sized morsels for their little mouths. His egg was cradled in his lap. This was the best day ever!
Julim was completely enthralled. They were so cute! a little green and a gold, perfect in every detail. he saw Prinner cutting meat and quickly started on the platter near him, wanting the meat to be small enough to not choke a newly hatched lizard. What would hatch next? Surely a male?

J'lin shook his head as he saw Kogran's little gold hatchling. "She'll be a handful for you," he laughed a little. He shoved the platter of meat toward the candidate, after grabbing a few more pieces. His little green would be full before too much longer, there was only so much space in a lizard hatchling's belly.
Among dragons, of course, golds were much higher maintenance than greens, and J'lin didn't envy the candidate his glittery pet. The only real advantage he thought the kid would have was the possiblity of getting to distribute her eggs himself in the future. J'lin's little green might lay clutches, but he would probably never be able to find the eggs.
He looked over at Eavan again. "Portenth was worried you would be doing chores and miss out on your egg. I guess he or Sulee got your attention, then," he commented. After all the effort people had gone to to find the eggs, it would be a big letdown if the eggs hatched without them.

Kogran couldn't listen to what the dragonrider was saying. He was distracted by how much his egg was moving, and how difficult it was to continue holding it gently without it falling. Just when he was sure he was about to drop it, the little gold escaped, and Kogran couldn't help but stare with utter surprise and awe. He didn't even mind when he got smacked in the face by a wing.
When he heard J'lin speak, Kogran tore his eyes away from the tiny gold to listen. And he had something to feed it! Oh good! He pushed a chunk of egg to the floor, not thinking about making a mess, and grabbed a couple pieces from the bowl. The gold tried to grab a couple once they were within range, but thankfully, Kogran managed to only let her have one. One at a time, right? He looked at the only other lizard that had hatched to see if he idea was correct.
Of course, he was holding the gold with his right hand and trying to awkwardly feed one piece of runner to her at a time, and that wasn't working out very well. And there was something else that he needed to do, besides feed and sit down.... Oh!
"Thanks," Kogran said to J'lin with a brief smile. With that, Kogran took a seat, and did his very best to keep the gold (she needed a name, didn't she? Firelizards don't have names when they hatch like dragons, right? Kogran desperation hoped he didn't name her something she wouldn't like.) fed while setting her on his lap and getting the remaining chunk of egg out of the way. Ugh, there was just enough egg goo to make everything a tiny bit slimy.

[ooc: sorry guys, I've been way busy >< pardon this bad post, but I just wanted to get it in so we could keep things going]
The day had started out just like any other. Wake up, slip out of the barracks, bathe, take care of Shade, do chores. It was both soothing and disturbing to have such a regular schedule in the Weyr already. Ophelia wasn't quite sure how to feel about it. The one thing that remained unpredictable was the little blue and yellow speckled firelizard egg that she kept carefully piled in mounds of hot sand in a basket beneath her cot. She wanted to keep it as warm as possible, and thus thought her own body heat would help in that. In the days when she brought it with her to chores, Shade was particularly good at guarding it for her.
On this particular day, she had left the egg in the barracks -- it wasn't due to hatch in a few days anyway -- and was headed in that direction for a quick lunch break. The moment she entered the barracks, a shrill whine caught her attention and she glanced over at Shade. The large canine was standing by her cot, his hackles raised as he stared beneath it. A frown creased Ophelia's brow. "What is it, boy?" she murmured, glancing around to see if anyone else was present. Moving swiflty, she knelt beneath the cot and pulled out the egg, her eyes widening slightly as she noticed it's erratic movements. Already? "Come," she said and, grabbing the egg in her arms, rose and strode out of the barracks. Shade followed obediently at her heels, his slitted eyes glancing around them warily.
When they reached the dining cavern, Ophelia quickly noticed that other people had gathered with their eggs, and she recognized a few of the candidates. The rider -- she discerned by the knots -- however, was foreign to her. Slowly arching a brow, Ophelia strode over to the group, glancing quickly among them. "My greetings to you all," she mused aloud, then quickly took a seat next to Julim with a nod to the boy. Noticing that a few had already hatched, Ophelia placed her own egg on the table, watching it intently.

”Hello, Kogran. Welcome to the hatching.” Eavan said with a delighted smile. The lad hadn’t been there more than five minutes it seemed, before his eggs shattered and a tiny gold was left in his hands. ”Oh, look at that! Congratulations Kogran. She’s a dainty little darling.” Eavan said with wide eyes. She was jealous that her egg hadn’t hatched yet, but patience was a virtue and she was sure it wouldn’t be long now.
”Yes, it seems us candidates were the ones available to look when their mother hid them here, there and everywhere.” Eavan said in response to J’lin’s question. The poor bronzerider probably felt a bit outnumbered with there only being candidates about him. To make things even more one sided, Prinner and Ophelia came in. Eavan gave both of them nods and a smile. Yes, even Ophelia. They were trying to be civil with each other after all.
”Yes, please send my thanks to Portenth. I was actually not doing chores. I was near my egg in the barracks. He warned me about it about the same time the gold mother came in to inform us. Must say I was pretty shocked to have such a beautiful deep voice in my head. You’ll tell him he has a wonderful voice won’t you?” Eavan replied to J’lin giving him wink to let him know that she knew the dragon loved being praised and fawned over.
Now it was just a waiting game to see whose egg would hatch next. All of them had been twitching and moving so it could be any one of them. Eavan was curious to see what all the eggs held. So far it had been a completely female brood and she thought it would be funny if all the eggs did indeed have girls in them, though she knew that wasn’t likely.

For long moments as Ophelia eyed the deep blue egg, the sunny yellow spotted shell seemed impervious to the wriggling creature inside. Each burst of movement was followed by prolonged stillness. The egg started to roll, but caught against a dent in the table before going too far. With the egg held immobile, the baby redoubled its efforts and managed to poke a hole to breathe from. Sips of air seemed to rejuvenate the little one. It worked on the shell surrounding the hole, making queer little sounds that could only be frustration. A more forceful peck caused the pumpkin-brown head to stab right out through the hole, cracking shell around it. Comically, the baby gaped its maw and shrieked furiously before drawing its head back in. Whatever it did next was most effective; the shell split almost perfectly in half and fell away from the glistening-wet little body. The smell of food was too much to bear. The five-inch-long brown stumbled quickly off the table and into the air, flapping unevenly at first but at least keeping him aloft. The movements came more naturally when he sighted the platter of meat, and he glided right toward it, eyes flaming red with hatchling hunger. He didn't like the exertion, but couldn't resist the temptation! As he landed, creeling, his color was a bit more obvious; the brief flight had dried a little of the egg fluid from his hide. Just like the pie his coloring resembled, the top parts were a nice toasty burnt sienna, fading gradually to a lighter tawny hue on his feet. He bent to snatch a mouthful of meat, almost a caricature in his all-encompassing desire for sustenance. Then he paused to glance quickly around, tilting his head curiously at the people. There was something vaguely interesting about one of them in particular, as if he should know her. Ophelia's voice would be instantly familiar: it would be the catalyst that latched him onto her. The "Pumpkin Pie" brown to OpheliaStarting personality: Lazy, stubborn, efficient, sweet.

It seemed the egg was going to take it's time. Ophelia watched it for another moment as it bounced around, but then allowed herself to glance around the table. As it was, she noticed Eavan's smile and although she didn't respond with one of her own, Ophelia inclined her head slightly. At the moment she had no quarrels with the girl. Then her gaze skimmed over the other eggs, and she noticed a small green and gold firelizard. Who had the gold gone to? Ophelia glanced up swiftly to see Kogran, and couldn't help but grin almost impishly. The dragonrider's comment drew her attention, and then she was focused on Kogran once more.
"Think you can keep your gold from hiding eggs like the mother, Kogran?" Ophelia asked with wry humor in her voice, resting her chin on one of her upturned palms. But then Eavan's voice cut in, and Ophelia couldn't help the irritation that flowed through. As she opened her mouth to speak, however, she noticed the way that Eavan winked at the dragonrider. Disgust flowed through her. Almost immediately the girl was dismissed from her mind. If that was the way that she gained people's admiration, through flirting and praise, then so be it. Personally, Ophelia felt that Eavan merely made these compliments so that people would like her. Which, in Ophelia's book, was downright manipulative.
However, at that moment a loud crack drew her attention and she instantly gazed down at the egg in front of her, all thoughts of Eavan, J'lin, and even Kogran gone from her mind. A shrill scream filled the air, causing Ophelia to wince slightly, before a damp, gangly creature spilled forth. Almost immediately the creature took to the air, something that Ophelia admired with a subtle grin on her face. But then the firelizard, which she had just determined to be brown, dove on the platter of food, devouring it hungrily. "My my," she murmured, too quiet for the firelizard to hear. But then the little brown tilted its head to the side and glanced towards her, and she extended a hand, which he watched, warily. "Come here, little boy," she murmured, and with a creel of recognition the brown waddled over. As Ophelia grabbed another piece of meat and extended it towards him, a muted rainbow flashed in the brown's eyes as he glanced up at her. For a moment it was almost overwhelming to Ophelia, to be aware of a small yet persistent presence in her mind, and she paused. But then pangs of hunger, as well as adoration and loyalty, tickled the back of her mind, and she continued feeding the brown. She used one finger to stroke his eyeridge as she pondered a name.
